JUSTIN EVANS
Somewhere, in the dry anonymous desert
a small cricket waits to emerge
from beneath a blossom of tumbleweed
continue its brief life cycle
with nothing of promise, nothing
of hope to complete the day.
In that same desert, everything alive
listens for the cricket’s song
as if its rhythmic scrapes
lay the foundation
of their day―a small comfort
literal and figurative―a companion
to what will come no matter
what has happened before.
