JENNA K FUNKHOUSER
It is enough, sometimes, just to be a body
Gathering, just to harvest a ripe offering
From the earth you, too, are made of.
The prickly pears and persimmons both
Astonish you with their sweetness, with
Their gentle heart tucked behind spine
And skin. The purple juice of the olives
Stains your thumb and forefinger, and calls
The bees like a song of sun and gold.
In the sun’s heat, you, too, become a creature
Sated by warmth and sweetness. You, too,
Grow roots and stretch towards whatever
The light wants to nourish forth from you.
