LISA SULTANI

The chattering embers

Words are not enough, yet neither is violence--
I draw a line in the sand, then erase it
My country’s history evokes a birdsong
which begins suddenly, and echoes
through a river. In this we must swim.

Once, I wished to change things. Now?
I scatter doubt across my grandchildren’s
vision. This is seed for the birds:
those that tell the wet truth of my country.

Ms. Sultani earned her MA in Library and Information Studies from the University of Wisconsin- Madison. She now lives in Atlanta, GA, where she does her best to avoid the freeways. Her poetry is included in Borderless, Doubly Mad, MORIA and The Talon Review, among others.
